And this is very exciting for students, I think it It gives students something to aspire to, it gives students an example of someone who has dedicated their life
to the work the students themselves do, and I remember first starting here and how scary
it was to have a Pulitzer Prize-winning author as the first professor of writing
but they make it sound natural, which makes it seem like no There is a barrier
between students and professors and this is a strong feeling,
look who you can work with here you are in the presence of writers who are actually engaged
at a very high cultural level in the same artistic struggles that it is exhilarating to be in the classroom it is fun to encourage the emerging efforts of bright and hopeful young people

One of my greatest pleasures in teaching is to be with the students
in that moment of the first times when the byline is like picking up a newspaper
and their name there is the best I feel like I’m getting ready for something but it takes hold
of all my heart with all my heart all my soul I know when I’m entering a class I’m going
to be tested and challenged in ways that I really rely on and I’m also going
to see future literature in this semester, that’s what brings you back to the classroom,
where you see people find seeing people months and months after they break through
the wall and start singing, and it feels like a writer isn’t becoming a good writer
Once you write you also become a good writer by studying the writing of the great writers
who came before the point is can we give you the tools you can use in a week
in a year in 10 years to produce the kind of writing that will truly speak to others

That we play in it between our workshops In addition to all these craft lessons,
the best moments happen in the writing workshop itself, it’s clear that it only happened
in the writing workshop like the one in Colombia which is so unique It’s in the fact that it brings
back so much sympathy and consideration and the time that is devoted to them gives students
that literal cocoon they get to form more of a community and writers who work in isolation but need communities we need peers who have to feel safe in order to grow creatively
And I think our students feel this way.
I want to make sure that the soil in which our poets grow is only plowed

but to allow writers to explore different styles of writing.

This is a book she’s a part of because it’s called
The Heart of the Third Millennium and it was a Best Translated
Book Finalist and just won the National Translation Award the way it generally
works When you finish coursework after two years you can during the summer after
the fourth semester finish your thesis, but you can also take An extra year called Research Arts
here and that gives you time to really work on the thesis,
so this is the book that came out of it I came to Colombia for my graduation thesis
I came to Colombia for a non-fiction study, and I wanted to write a book and I wrote Air Traffic
and in the process for the three years which
here I also accidentally won a Pulitzer Prize in Poetry and there are many books
first read when they were in dissertation form, I mean every agent
ever spoke to said you know if someone from Colombia sends me his thesis that I will read ,

To offer free arts education to underserved communities
and to offer educational training for MFA, as many instructors would like
to pursue teaching opportunities once they leave the program, therefore
I had the opportunity to expand the program and this program is all about bringing creativity writing workshops in various communities around New York City,
I have I’ve always been really committed to people who don’t have a lot of access
to capture the intangible to give a voice to the thing that most people don’t hear so here you can be an artist you can ask questions you have to take a risk and then step outside and talk to our publishers our panels with our editors mixer Where alumni of the program meet with agents for an evening together on campus. NYC is obviously the publishing capital but we also want to put a little brake on it
Sometimes giving students the space and time to develop themselves and not just push themselves into the fray but create enough of a safe environment for them to really work on their craft so that they’re really ready when they get out of that place.
In this world I would like to say that it is not only the writing that changes here, you as a person will change so if you come here, prepare for that and unleash how to be an artist, this is really a generous and honest place to become a writer and a human being
